Struggling to pay your Council Tax?

Using enforcement agents to recover unpaid Council Tax

We will consider recovering what you owe from any benefits or earnings you receive. You will also have the chance to make a payment arrangement.

If we do not attach to your income and no arrangement is made, we may ask enforcement agents to collect what you owe for us. Enforcement agents were once known as bailiffs.

If we pass your case to enforcement agents, a £75 fee will be added to your account immediately. You should contact the enforcement agency straight away to discuss payment arrangements to avoid further fees being added to your account.

If you fail to pay the enforcement agents in full or agree suitable repayments, an enforcement agent will visit you and an additional £235 enforcement fee will be added to your account. This will be in addition to the £75 fees already incurred. Further fees may apply if goods are removed and/or sold to clear the debt.

Fee stage Fixed fee  Extra amount
Compliance stage - enforcement notice £75  0 percent
Enforcement stage - enforcement agent visit to take control of goods £235  7.5 percent of debts over £1,500
Sale or disposal stage - enforcement visit to remove goods  £110  7.5 percent of debts over £1,500

Once your case has been passed to enforcement agents it will remain with them until the full debt is cleared.
