Effective managed moves

When is a managed move appropriate?

The Managed Move process could be considered when:

  • A period of off-site direction has taken place and a permanent move to the host school has been agreed by all parties, pupil, and parents
  • The relationship between the pupil and home school is at risk of breaking down beyond repair
  • The pupil has stated that they are unhappy at the school and is refusing to attend
  • A pupil with additional personal or social emotional or mental health needs is making little or no educational progress in the current setting and may benefit from a fresh approach, peer group or alternative provision
  • It is felt to be in the pupil’s best interests

-This list is not exhaustive

At no point should a Managed Move be presented to parents and pupils as their only option.

It is important that a range of strategies have been discussed, tried and recorded using the Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) graduated response document and an ‘assess, plan, do, review’ approach used before reaching crisis point. The timing of a move needs to be considered carefully, in particular, how a move fits in with term dates, starting new courses, teacher assessments or external examinations.
