Herringthorpe Stadium has reopened following extensive refurbishment to the track and changing facilities.
Built in the 1960s, the stadium is one of the borough’s leading sports venues, catering for a wide range of sports, activities and events.
The £500,000 improvements have been funded by Rotherham Council as part of its capital investment programme and is one of a number of projects that will improve amenities in local communities.
Following the work, visitors to the stadium will now benefit from new floodlights, PA system and improvements to the track and hammer cage.
The changing facilities have also undergone extensive refurbishment with new lighting, heating, toilet facilities and a fresh new décor.
Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Councillor David Sheppard said: “Herringthorpe Stadium is an important sporting venue in the borough, with schools, clubs and individuals using the site for a whole host of sporting activities.
“Making sure our residents live healthy, active lifestyles is a priority for us, and by providing access to top quality facilities we hope even more people are encouraged to take part in exercise to improve both their physical and mental wellbeing.”
The Stadium has been home to Rotherham Harriers for over 40 years, with the club training at the venue twice a week as well as hosting annual events.
Steve Gaines from Rotherham Harriers said of the improvements: “All at Rotherham Harriers welcome, and are extremely grateful for, the investment approved by Rotherham Council, to improve the facilities at Herringthorpe Stadium. This significant investment is way beyond anything the club could hope to fund.”
The running track is open Tuesdays, Thursdays (5-9pm) and Saturdays (9-12pm). Other times are available upon request for group bookings/ schools.
The centre pitch is available for football matches/ training at the same times /days as the casual running. For more information or to book contact – herringthorpe.stadium@rotherham.gov.uk
