Brampton Bierlow was a close mining community for many years before Cortonwood Colliery closed.
The village has a post office, chemist, a Chinese takeaway village shop 2 cafe's a public house a sunbed shop hairdresser's and beauty salon.
There is also the Cortonwood Comeback community centre which used to be a chapel, they hold various events they also have a foodbank and deliver lunches to some of the residents.
The old Cortonwood Miners Welfare club is now run by trustees and they have several groups including boxing for all ages and football teams.
Brampton Bierlow Parish Council are based at the Parish hall on Knollbeck Lane and have various groups running during the week, the Hall can be hired for a fee and Parishioners get a discount. There is bar if required and weddings birthdays charity events can be catered for with all age groups welcome.
The council have updated parts of the premises and are looking forward to doing more improvements within the near future.
A coffee and games afternoon from 1.00pm -3.00pm is held every Thursday at the Parish Hall, a warm and cosy space all free all ages welcome.
The village also has a skate park and children's safe play area with swings climbing frame and Allotments on Elsecar Road.
