Council housing and housing association
The housing register manages who gets Council housing and some housing association homes in Rotherham.
Rotherham Council has over 20,000 Council homes. We also work with 21 housing associations that offer over 5,000 affordable homes in the area.
There are about 6,500 households on the housing register, so there is a high demand for social housing. This means it can take a while to get a Council or housing association home, even if you have priority. We can only offer a home when one becomes available.
Apply to join to Housing Register
To be accepted, you need to meet certain criteria, like having a local connection to Rotherham.
You can find out more about who can join the register by reading the Housing Allocation Policy.
If you want to move into a housing association home, you still need to be on the Council’s housing register. But it's a good idea to contact housing associations directly because they don't list all their homes on the Council’s website.

If you are a current Council or Housing Association tenant in England, you can swap homes with someone else if you find a match.
Find a suitable property with HomeSwapper
Once you find a suitable property, let us know. We will need to do some checks before approving the exchange. This includes:
- Checking your rent account to make sure you are not behind on payments
- Ensuring the property is in good condition
- Making sure there are no reports of anti-social behavior
