Self-neglect and hoarding

What is self-neglect?

There are three types of self-neglect:

Lack of self-care that may endanger safety or well-being, for example:

  • neglecting personal hygiene
  • neglecting nutrition and hydration
  • neglecting health

Lack of care of the home that may lead to potential dangers, for example:

  • fire risks caused by hoarding
  • health risks caused by dirty environments

Refusal of help that might solve these issues, for example:

  • refusing care services
  • refusing health assessments or interventions
