Signs of self-neglect

Signs of self-neglect can include:

  • very unclean conditions or property being in a poor state of repair

  • dishevelled or inappropriate clothes for the weather

  • vermin, flies, or unpleasant smells around the home
  • poor diet and nutrition
  • lack of personal hygiene
  • isolation

Causes of self-neglect

It is not always possible to find a cause for self-neglect. Self-neglect does not mean someone has a mental health problem.

It might be caused by:

  • poor physical health
  • poor mental health
  • addiction
  • physical illness
  • traumatic life changes
