Rotherham East network improvements

How has the consultation shaped the design?

Designs are still not finalised, and we are exploring how to include as much community feedback as possible whilst still ensuring the design is compliant with best practice guidance.

Roundabout

We had previously proposed two options for St Ann’s Roundabout, whilst replacing the subways with signalised crossings was popular for both options, there was a clear preference for maintaining all arms of the roundabout open.

This option would maintain a roundabout, adding traffic light crossings to ensure pedestrian safety.

Respondents also highlighted that increased greenery and street lighting in the area would be beneficial. We’re also exploring the opportunity to provide allotments for the local college’s lunch time gardening club.

Consideration is also being given to improving access and egress into Eastwood Village from St Ann’s Roundabout.

Fitzwilliam Road

After consultation, participants raised concerns around the proposed closure of Grosvenor road, we are now instead proposing a new location for the bus stop which would allow the road to remain open.

Businesses identified a need for customers and delivery vehicles to safely access and park. We are now looking at options to increase legitimate parking spaces allowing deliveries and customers to easily access the local shops safely parking out of the way of traffic. We are also looking into improving turning circles for larger vehicles to access the side roads between Shakespeare Road and St Ann’s Roundabout.

Drainage on this road was raised as an issue, as part of this programme we are looking at how we can mitigate pooling water and integrate sustainable urban drainage systems.

We are also looking at opportunities to increase attractive green space.

Neighbourhood Streets

The council had previously identified 3 streets, which based on data required some level of intervention to reduce the speed and volume of traffic. Following the consultation, which evaluated the perception of need from the public we are suggesting the following improvements.

Badsley Moor Lane & Middle Lane

Suggested scheme to:

  • Reduce vehicle speeds to 20mph, may require improved traffic calming
  • Improve crossing facilities for pedestrians
  • Manage parking availability
  • Measures to improve safety for children nearby the Primary and Secondary Schools.

Doncaster Road

Suggested scheme to:

  • Reduce vehicle speeds to 20mph, may require improved traffic calming
  • Improve crossing facilities for pedestrians
  • Manage parking availability
  • Remark existing cycle lanes for maintenance and visibility
  • Alignment with Local Neighbourhood Road Safety Scheme for East Dene Primary

Neighbourhood Suggestions

Throughout the consultation we took on board suggestions from participants on what they’d like to see to make walking, wheeling, cycling and access to public transport easier for in their neighbourhoods. This includes:

  • Pedestrian and Road safety improvements to Ridge Road
  • Improvements to Erskin Road
