Paying for your care

Care paid for by other agencies

NHS Continuing Health Care

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is a package of care that is arranged and paid for by the NHS for people over 18 years of age who have health needs that are assessed as being severe, difficult to manage, or changing quickly.

You might be entitled to this package of care if your main need for support is related to your health. Integrated Care Boards, known as ICBs (the NHS organisations that commission local health services), must assess you for NHS Continuing Healthcare if it seems that you may need it. If you are assessed and found to not be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare but you still have some health needs then the NHS may pay for part of the package of support. This is known as a ‘joint’ package of care.

As part of your social care assessment, your assessor will talk about the eligibility process for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding.

Section 117

If a person is detained in a psychiatric hospital under certain sections of the Mental Health Act, then they may be eligible for what is known as 117 aftercare. This means that any services provided by either the Local Authority or local health trust that help prevent a readmission to hospital should be provided free of charge.
